U.S. Mobile Land Office - Register of homestead receipts, 1872-1874.

The Homestead Act of 1862 was passed on 1862 Feb. 28 to go into effect on 1863 Jan. 1. The act allowed claimants to homestead up to 160 acres of land free of charge except for a small commission to be paid when filing the claim. Claimants were required to live on the land for five years from the date of entry. This series consists of a register of receipts issued for land entered under the Homestead Act. Each entry contains the date of the receipt, the number of the receipt, the name and residence of the purchaser, the location of the land, the quantity of land, the price per acre, amount paid in fees and commissions, and remarks. Remarks note the number of excess receipts, the date and number of final proof, or if the application was cancelled. These records document homesteading in Ala. and provide information about homesteaders.
